PGT Door Installation: The Miami Owner’s Guide
PGT door installation in Miami typically runs $450 to $1,850 for a complete frame-and-panel replacement, depending on the model, hardware, and what the old frame left behind. We stock PGT-compatible components on our trucks for the most common PGT lines, and most installs are done in a single visit. You usually notice the problem the way every Miami homeowner notices it: the door starts dragging across the threshold at 3 p.m. after a full day of sun, or it won’t latch cleanly anymore because the frame shifted during the last hurricane season.
Hale Windows Miami is an independent service provider. We are not affiliated with PGT, but we install and service their doors every week across Miami-Dade, and we know exactly which parts hold up in this climate and which ones don’t.
Which PGT Models This Applies To
We install doors for the PGT WinGuard series, the PGT 700 series, and the PGT 300 series sliding glass doors. Each line has its own frame profile and hardware set, so a part that fits a WinGuard won’t necessarily drop into a 700 series frame. Here’s the compatibility gotcha we see most often: PGT changed its threshold design between 2014 and 2016, and doors from those years require a transition kit to mount a newer panel into an older frame. If you’re not sure which year yours is, check the lower left corner of the door panel for a silver AAMA sticker. The serial and product code are stamped there.
When it comes to OEM versus aftermarket for PGT doors, our recommendation is straightforward: use PGT OEM parts whenever the door is still under warranty or carries a Miami-Dade NOA (Notice of Acceptance) that your insurance relies on. For older doors outside warranty, quality aftermarket rollers, weatherstripping, and handlesets from brands like Prime-Line or Don-Jo work fine and save you 20 to 30 percent. We carry both on the truck. Spencer Odell reads the frame the same way he reads a rough opening: if the existing metal is true and square, aftermarket parts are fine. If it’s been kicked, sagged, or waterlogged, we go OEM so the tolerances match.
Signs Your PGT Door Installation Is Failing
- The door drags or catches near the latch side. This is almost always roller wear or frame settling. Miami’s daily heat-and-cool cycle expands and contracts the aluminum track, and after eight to ten years the rollers flatten on one side. Continuing to force the door makes the track grooves worse.
- The lock won’t throw fully. PGT multi-point locks are precise. If the door sits even 1/8 inch out of square, the locking bolts stop lining up with the strikes. Forcing the handle bends the connecting rods, which turns a $90 adjustment into a $300 lock replacement.
- Water stains on the interior floor after heavy rain. In Miami, this usually means the sill pan drain channels are blocked or the weatherstripping at the corners has compressed. Salt air accelerates rubber breakdown; we routinely replace corner weatherstripping on doors within 2 miles of the coast every five years.
- The panel rattles inside the frame when closed. Loose keeper screws or worn interlock hooks. This is the earliest warning sign and the cheapest to fix, but ignored, it wears the frame at the interlock point and makes the whole door sloppy.
- Screen door no longer slides smoothly, or falls out of the track. PGT’s screen assemblies ride on a separate upper track. Bent frames from wind gusts are common, but the more typical failure in Miami is the plastic guide block at the bottom, which turns brittle after a few seasons of UV exposure.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
| Service | Typical Miami Price |
|---|---|
| Panel alignment & roller replacement (both rollers) | $180 – $340 |
| Multi-point lock rebuild (handle, rods, catches) | $220 – $460 |
| Weatherstripping & threshold seal replacement | $90 – $210 |
| Full door panel replacement (PGT WinGuard) | $850 – $1,850 |
| Full frame-and-panel replacement (new install) | $1,200 – $2,400 |
Every one of those numbers is a written price before we start. No change orders, no “while we’re in there” surprises. The range depends on door width, finish, glass package, and what we find when the old panel comes out. Labor and parts are itemized on the estimate. Every installation carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it’s not right, we make it right, no argument needed.
DIY or Call Us?
There are a few things an owner can safely do: clean the bottom track with a brush and vacuum, check the screws on the keeper plates for tightness, and note whether the panel is visibly out of level. That’s where we want you to stop. PGT doors are heavy. A WinGuard panel can weigh 200 pounds or more, and the counterbalance and adjustment work requires lifting the panel out of the track and supporting it safely. One bad lift turns a hundred-dollar roller job into a bent frame and a broken glass unit. The same goes for multi-point lock work: the tension in those connecting rods will snap your finger if it releases wrong. We’d rather you call us at (786) 442-1123 and let us determine whether the existing panel is salvageable before you start pulling screws.
FAQs
A PGT door with proper installation and average Miami exposure lasts 12 to 20 years on the frame, with rollers, weatherstripping, and locks needing service at the 5-to-8-year mark. Coastal salt air shortens hardware life by roughly two years. Call (786) 442-1123 for us to assess your door’s specific condition.
Yes, in about 70 percent of cases. If the frame rail is intact and the glass is sound, we replace the failing component and your door keeps working. Replacement becomes the right call when the frame is racked beyond adjustment or the glass seal has failed and moisture is inside the unit. We’ll show you the specific reason on-site before quoting anything.
A roller or lock replacement is done in one to two hours. A full panel swap runs half a day. A full tear-out and new frame installation is a one-day job in most Miami homes, unless the rough opening needs remediation from prior water damage. The written estimate includes the expected duration before we start.
Yes. We carry the most common PGT rollers, lock assemblies, weatherstripping profiles, and interlock hooks on the truck, and we maintain local stock for the rest. We also keep components for CGI, CWS, and ES Windows doors, since many Miami homes have mixed product lines across openings. Call (786) 442-1123 with your AAMA sticker information and we’ll confirm part availability before we schedule.
